New York Zen Community is a Sangha dedicated to Shikantaza Zazen and Dōgen study. We offer lectures exploring the teachings of Dōgen Zenji and other Buddhist texts, with a focus on their practical relevance and integration into daily life.

Part of a global network of disciples and students of Okumura Shōhaku Rōshi of the Sōtō Zen School of Japan, we are under the direct lineage of Sawaki Kōdō, Uchiyama Kōshō and Okumura Shōhaku.

An expanding collection of resources is being curated to support independent Buddhist study.

We continue meeting online to work on our original translation of Hōkyō-ki by Dogen Zengi

The most renowned and widely-venerated portion of the Lotus Sūtra

Mondō is an opportunity for Zen students to ask questions and engage in dialogues with a teacher.

Containing Gautama Buddha's most mature teachings, this ancient sūtra is a detailed depiction of the Buddha's last months of life.
